Dr. Bill Jermyn's memorial information

John William “Bill” Jermyn III, D.O., died May 15, 2008 in Jefferson City.  Dr. Jermyn was born February 14, 1951 in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of John William Jermyn, Jr. and Patricia Reese Jermyn.  His father preceded him in death.

Bill was a graduate of Texas A&M University and received his doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine.  He was a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians and the American Academy of Emergency Medicine.

For the past three years, Dr. Jermyn had served as Director of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) for the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, and had worked tirelessly with stakeholders in the EMS community to create a seamless emergency medical system for the citizens of Missouri.

He began his thirty-three year career in emergency medical services as an attending physician in the emergency department at Normandy Hospitals in St. Louis, and then served as the director of the emergency departments at Community Hospital, Grand Junction, Colorado and the Moberly Regional Medical Center, Moberly, Missouri.  Bill had been an Assistant Professor of Clinical Surgery at the University of Missouri, Columbia, an Attending Physician for the Emergency Physicians of Mid-Missouri and at the time of his death,  an instructor in the Division of Emergency Medicine at Washington University, Barnes Hospital in St. Louis.

He was a vital member of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) serving as Immediate Past Chair of both the EMS Committee and the EMS/Prehospital Section; a member of the Awards Committee, Disaster Preparedness Committee; Disaster Preparedness leader on the ACEP Report Card Task Force; and as a Missouri Councilor.  He also performed multiple national liaison duties for the College, and had served on the Trauma Care/Injury Prevention and Council Steering Committee.  He was beginning his third term as ACEP representative to the Board of Directors for the Commission on Accreditation for Ambulance Services, having led the 2004 standards revision project.  He also co-chaired the National Association of Emergency Medical Service Physicians/American College of Emergency Physicians Task Force for Out of Hospital Specialty Board Certification.

Dr. Jermyn was past president of the Missouri College of Emergency Physicians and had been re-elected to their Board of Directors.  He had served as the Chair of the Missouri State Advisory Council on EMS, was a member of the EMS Gathering of Eagles coalition, American Medical Association, National Association of Emergency Medical Service Physicians, Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons, and the Missouri EMS Association.

Dr. Jermyn is survived by the love of his life, Melinda Ligon, St. Louis, to whom he was to be married on July 19, 2008; mother, Patricia Reese Jermyn, Dallas, Texas; sister and brother-in law Deborah and R. Steven Paulson, M.D., Dallas, Texas; and nephews Brandon Paulson, San Francisco, California; Andrew Paulson, Boston, Massachusetts; and Kevin Paulson, Dallas, TX.

A memorial service will be held June 10, 2008, 1:30 p.m., at the First Assembly of God Church, 1900 Route C in Jefferson City.  Memorials may be sent to the Humane Society or a charity of the donor’s choice.
