Death of Board Member Dr. John W. “Bill” Jermyn
Death of Board Member Dr. John W. “Bill” Jermyn - Announcement
On behalf of the CAAS Board of Directors and Panel of Commissioners, it is with deep regret that we announce the death of Board Member Dr. John W. “Bill” Jermyn. Dr. Jermyn was a passionate CAAS Board Member and advocate for Emergency Medical Services. Bill was a well loved and highly respected emergency physician with the unique ability to bring a diverse group of passionate people together to solve EMS and acute health care issues. He brought his physician expertise to the Board of Directors along with his expert knowledge of ambulance administration. He was a key contributor to the CAAS standards revision process in 2000 and served as the chair on the 2004 Specialty Care Transport standard committee responsible for the development of the most recent CAAS standards. Additionally, Bill served as a mentor and role model for many of our site reviewers and staff members. Bill's participation, compassion, tenacity, and complete follow through will truly be missed by our organization. As we prepare our upcoming EMS week celebrations, please keep Bill’s family and friends in your thoughts.
Regards,
Sarah L. McEntee

Dr. Bill Jermyn
Dr. Jermyn unselfishly offered so much of his time and knowledge to CAAS. His dedication and passion for quality initiatives in EMS has resulted in changes that will continue to touch countless lives in the future. Bill was an incredibly kind man; always ready to listen and offer the right advice at the moment it was needed most. He was a mentor and a friend, and I will miss him dearly. Although he is gone, his influence remains all around us.
My deepest condolences go out to Melinda and Bill's family and friends.

A true friend of EMS...
When I first heard of Bill's untimely death, I just sat in front of my computer and stared at the screen in disbelief. I pictured him in one of a million meetings or discussions or hallway chats where he passionately discussed EMS and helped form, over many, many years, much of what we are today.
As the new kid on the block, I looked to him in CAAS Board meetings as a barometer of what was right, and more specifically, how to do things to make sure the message was heard. I used to enjoy how he always said "Missourah" and how he would briskly walk around in sneakers with his glasses dangling around his neck. He always smiled, always called your name when he saw you and was eager to catch up with you on your World.
It's rare in life that we cross paths with people that are so passionately driven, up to speed on all the nuances of an issue and can work to make things better in such an amiable, friendly, collaborative way.
Bill could, and he did. Every day.
We take what we see and like in others and incorporate it into our own DNA. We will all be better people, and EMS a better profession, thanks to Bill.

My old Missouri friend Bill
Bill was a friend, mentor, co-conspirator and one of those truly unique personalities that seem drawn to EMS. I will never forget the lessons of that first CAAS review he shepherded me through.
His drive and tenacity were legendary, and his objectivity was sometimes painful for some, but all of us who value the mission and sacrifice of those infected with EMS are unquestionably richer for having known him. His legacy (all of us and what we strive to represent) will not fade with the passing of time.

A Passionate Advocate
I didn't know Bill very well personally, but the times I had met with him and interacted with him, I was impressed with his infectious enthusiasm and passion for EMS. He had a sparkle in his eyes and a gregarious and happy nature about him that conveyed to anyone within range that he REALLY loved EMS and especially those who were the day to day providers of patient care.
He contributed so much to CAAS, but that was just one part of his lifelong commitment to being a passionate advocate for all of us. We have truly suffered a great loss, but a loss that can live on by following Bill's example of "service above self" in all that we do.
With sincere condolences to his fiance and family, and all of Bill's extended EMS family,

A Great Loss
I had the privilege of working with Bill on CAAS site visits and most recently in his role as the State EMS Medical Director for Missouri. His death is a great loss for the EMS community - for the docs he so wonderfully represented in his work with ACEP, for the ambulance services he greatly enjoyed reviewing for CAAS, for the EMTs and Paramedics for whom he was such a passionate advocate, and for the patients who benefitted not only from his clinical care but for all those who benfitted because of his dedication and commitment to making the system better for everyone.
The day after Bill died, the Missouri General Assembly passed House Bill 1790 that Bill, in his role as State EMS Medical Director, had worked very hard to move forward. The legislation allows the designation of STEMI centers throughout the state following the trauma center model. An honorable part of his legacy that like Bill, will improve the health and save lives of his fellow citizens.
Bill was not just a colleague, he was a friend and his death leaves a void on many levels. I will always appreciate the wisdom and the advice he gave me...God bless you and keep you Bill. You are missed and will not be forgotten.

I had the great honor and privilege to meet and work with Dr. Jermyn over the last couple years.
He was kind. He was passionate. He was articulate. He was a great listener, always giving you his undivided attention.
He truly wanted to make the world a better place... mission accomplished.
We will miss you but never forget you.
